ITACA - LABIRINTO - EM TRÂNSITO

MARIA RUIZ – ARTISTA COLOMBIANA
GALERIA CAÑIZARES – UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DA BAHIA
SALVADOR – BRASIL

Maria Ruiz´solo exhibition, called EN TRÂNSITO, is a very excited show, due to the exploration of different visual languages, including linguistic, visual art, instalation, graphic design and video.
Her work deals with contemporary concepts of identity/alteraty, globalization, transculturalization, multiplicity, rizoma, deconstruction, hipertextuality which dialogs with western culture and Greek literature and mythology [LABYRINTH AND ITACA].
The course of everything in life in many directions, lack of one interpretation and one center, based on many post-struturalists theorists, such as Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze and Gatarri, and the writer Jorge Luis Borges is always present on her art and writings.

Although we could say that Maria Ruiz approaches art as a kind of ironic game, as well as life, in her trip to Brazil from Colombia - in order to work on graduate visual arts program -, she approached many challenges and had to deal with the so called “culture shok”, well described in one of her favorite poem of Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis, Itaca. With her belongs, she brought this poem with the desire to include it in her art, perhaps unconsciously, but it turned to be the best description of her journey and part of the one of her best video instalation.
Itaca
Si vas a emprender el viaje hacia Itaca,
pide que tu camino sea largo,
rico en experiencias, en conocimiento.
A Lestrigones y a Cíclopes,
arribes a bahías nunca vistas;
detente en los emporios de Fenicia
y adquiere hermosas mercancías,
madreperla y coral, y ámbar y ébano,
perfumes deliciosos y diversos,
cuanto puedas invierte en voluptuosos
y delicados perfumes;
visita muchas ciudades de Egipto
y con avidez aprende de sus sabios.
Ten siempre a Itaca en la memoria.
Llegar allí es tu meta.
Mas no apresures el viaje.
Mejor que se extienda largos años;
no te engañará Itaca.
nem o colérico Posídon te intimidem;
eles no teu caminho jamais encontrarás
e belas mercancias adquirir:
madrepérolas, corais, âmbares, ébanos,
e perfumes sensuais de toda espécie,
quando houver, de aromas deleitosos.
A muitas cidades do Egito peregrina

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis (1863-1933) is one of the better known Greek poets of the 20th century. Born of Greek parents in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1863, he was their ninth and last child. His only known formal education was a brief enrollment in the Hermis Lyceum, a commercial school in Alexandria. Appointed clerk in the Ministry of Public Works in Alexandria in 1892, he held this position until his retirement in 1922. He died in Alexandria in 1933.
Almost all of Kavafis' work was in Greek; yet, his poetry remained unrecognized in Greece until after the publication of his first anthology in 1935. He is known for his prosaic use of metaphors, his briliant use of historical imagery, and his aesthetic perfectionism. These attributes, amongst others, have assure him of an enduring place in the literary pantheon of the Western World.
